Wanda Gag (1893–1946) – rhymes with ‘bog’ – studied at the Art Students League in New York, and eventually became the most admired illustrator of her time for her consummate draughtsmanship. She was drawn to a rural America that she could endow with a mystical aura, like Palmer did with Shoreham. This is a radiant example.
