Formed from grains of quartz cemented by infiltrations of water charged with carbonated calcium, these rare stones have been appreciated for their eccentric forms since the 18th century. Large samples were shown at Versailles, and provide an unexpected parallel to the appreciation of eccentric forms of Nature in China.
