The banded agate has swirling maculae, a quality much appreciated in the ancient world. This type of large flat murrhine is referred to by Juvenal as maximae, a high-end luxury product of the time, and the unpolished peg at the back was for fixing to a separate foot. It has been re-polished in more recent times.
