187. A Tibetan Stone Phallus

The stone is marcasite (iron sulphide), and the phallus had a dual purpose: as a pestle for grinding magical substances; and an object for ritual devotion, as the crimson puja powder indicates. It was found in a dry river-bed, and lay for many years in a European cabinet of curiosities.
